Tragedy struck the home of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Sutphin late yesterday afternoon when their 13-year-old son, Ronnie, drowned while wading in New River near the Hiwassee railroad bridge. The life saving crew worked for an hour in an effort to revive the boy but its efforts failed. He had been in the water better than 70-minutes when he was brought to the surface, it was pointed out.

Couldn't Swim

Ronnie, it was stated, was wading in the river by himself at the time he drowned. Harry Henderlite, of the life saving crew, said the boy apparently stepped off into a hole and drowned. He could not swim. It was stated his mother began the search for him when he did not return. She discovered his clothes on the river bank and a Mr. Taylor (first name unknown) dived and found the youth's body in some 15-feet of water. It was believed the boy drowned at approximately 4:30 p. m. The life saving crew was summoned at 5:30 p. m. but Taylor had discovered the body before they arrived.

Several Survivors

In addition to his parents, the victim is survived by one brother, Carl L. Sutphin, and two sisters, Margie Wanda and June Hope Sutphin of Hiwassee. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 10:30 a. m from the Max Creek Baptist church with the Rev. Edgar O Dell assisted by Rev. Emory Riggs, officiating. Interment will follow in Cecils Chapel cemetery. The body will be removed from Stricklers funeral home to the Sutphin residence late this evening where it will remain until the hour of the service.
