Gene spent his early years in and around Torrington. He entered the Navy and served from 1941 to 1946. He was in four major battles and two invasions. After the USS Lexington was sunk on May 8, 1942 in the battle of the Coral Sea, he was transferred on July 9, 1942 tothe USS Copahee.

He met the love of his life, Alma Arndt, in 1945, and they were married May 3, 1946, in Oakland, Calif. He worked road construction in Wyoming. They lived in Torrington until 1967, when they moved to Washington State where Gene worked at Bangor submarine base. He retired in 1984. They moved to Montana in 1995. Gene loved animals and spent many hours with his cattle, mules, donkeys and dog.

He is survived by his wife, Alma Pitman, of Fortine, Mont.; two daughters; Brenda Huyck of Fortine, Mont., and Linda Thompson of Troy, Mont.; one son, Jim Pitman of Port Orchard, Wash.; and a brother Harold Pitman of Colorado Springs, Colo.; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
