Samuel McClure Lillie, born 10 December 1837 in Gill Township, Sullivan County, Indiana, to John M. Lillie (1813-1890) and Elizabeth McClure (1816-?)--the 2nd of 2 children.
Samuel Lillie was known as one of the "Argonauts" of the gold rush of 1849, when they left Gill Township in Sullivan county, Indiana for the gold fields of California. An article appeared regarding their adventures - a brief clip of which is as follows:
"Among some of those who left for the gold fields of California at this time were William H. Hollenback
and his brother, David T. Hollenback, Jr., both sons of William H.Hollenback, Sr., and grandsons of Thomas Hollenback and Patsy Hollenback; Henry R. (Dick) Milam and his brother, John T. Samuel married at the age of 36 on 1 March 1874 a widow, Mary Jane Hoagland Ridgway, (1847-1905) in Sullivan County, Indiana. Mollie & Samuel Lillie had 3 children: (1) John Wiley Lillie (1874-1957); (2) Charles Grant Lillie (1879-1956); and (3) Jacob Samuel Lillie (1888-1985).
After his wife Mollie died in 1905, Samuel went to Texas with 2 of his sons in February, 1907, but died of pneumonia 2 weeks later at the age of 69 on 16 February 1907. They obviously brought his body back to Sullivan county, Indiana, to be buried next to his wife.
