He was married to Mahala Branam on August 9, 1853 and to them were born nine children, six daughters and three sons of whom seven survive. Two sons, Henry and Aquilla and the mother preceded the father in the great beyond. The surviving children are Mrs. Carrie Brown, Mrs. Margaret Simpson, Mrs. Jessie Throckmorton of Indiana, Mrs. Dora Sims of Decatur, Ill., Mrs. Emmaline Walden of Greenup, Ill., Mrs. America Keller of Willow Hill, Ill, and William Spurgeon of Newton, Ill.
He was married after the death of his first wife to Elizabeth Hendricks of Hidalgo, Ill, who with the children mentioned mourn the loss of a loving husband and an affectionate father.
Mr. Spurgeon was a good and useful citizen, upright, honest and enterprising and has many friends in this community who will regret to hear of his death. During his long illness he bore his sufferings with Christian fortitude and expressed his willingness and readiness to go before his Lord and master.
Funeral services were held at the family residence Tuesday June 21st, conducted by Rev. McCash of Hazeldell, Ill, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Aten cemetery.
Mr. Spurgeon will be remembered by many in this county. He resided in Unlos Village for a number of years.
