Funeral: 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Greenwood Chapel. Interment: Greenwood Memorial Park.
Pete was born Feb. 5, 1926, in Floyd to Jack and Jessie Hawkins. Pete was one of seven children born to sharecroppers during the Depression. The family moved to Fort Worth in 1941, the year Pearl Harbor was bombed. Pete married his wife of 65 years, Julia Hyacienth, before entering the Army. He was a decorated war hero from World War II with the 42nd Rainbow Division. It was his company who was first to release Jewish war prisoners from Dachau. He attended TWC on the G.I. Bill. After graduation he bought his first barbershop, in 1952, at Belknap and 28th Street in Haltom City and named it Pete's Barber Shop. In 1979, he co-founded Pro-Cuts Hair Salons along with his daughter, Charlotte Frerich, and son, Guy Hawkins. They sold the first franchise in 1982. When it sold in the late 1990s, there were over 200 stores. He and Julia retired to Ruidoso, N.M., and finally settled in Weatherford several years ago.
Pete was preceded in death by his mother and father; and sisters, Fay Richards, Avanell Sparks and Marverine Hearne.
Survivors: Wife, Julia; son, Guy; daughter, Charlotte and husband, Steve Frerich; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, Earl Hawkins; and sisters, Lucille Hawkins and Kathryn Craig.
