Abingdon, April 11 – Chester L. Downes, 67, a carpenter and former farmer, of Abingdon, died at 9:20 p.m. Saturday in Cottage Hospital, where he had been a patient since the previous night. Death was attributed to a heart attack.
Services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow in Abingdon Christian Church, the Rev. Donald Hogan officiating. The family has asked that memorial contributions be made to Abingdon Christian church building fund.
He was born July 8, 1898, in Roseville, the son of John and Jennie Day Downes. He was married in 1919 to Edith Eaton, who died in 1950. On April 11, 1954, he was married in Abingdon to Eliza J. Berry, who survives.
Also surviving are three brothers: Loren of Biggsville, and Maurice and Warren, both of Monmouth, and two sisters; Mrs. Lyle (Vivian) Galbreath of Kirkwood and Mrs. Elmer (Fenella) Cooper of Stronghurst. He was preceded in death by a brother.
He had served as trustee, elder, Sunday School superintendent and a member of the building committee of Abingdon Christian Church.
