Ernest F. Rudd Dies at Age 90
HOOSICK, N.Y. - Ernest F. Rudd, 90, one of the few Democratic office holders in the early years of the Town of Hoosick, died Wednesday at Putnam Memorial Hospital in Bennington. He had been a patient there since he sustained a broken hip in a recent fall.
Mr. Rudd was elected town highway superintendent for eight terms of two years each at times when Republican candidates were winners by considerable majorities. He was Democratic committeeman from the Second District for many years.
He was a life-long resident and dairy farmer in Hoosick and was active for many years in the New England Milk Producers Association. He held many records in serving community organizations, including 54 years as treasurer of the Baptist Church and 56 years as secretary-treasurer of the Hoosick Co-operative Insurance Co. He was a charter member and past master of Hoosick Grange.
Mr. Rudd was a son of the late Sanford and Celestia (Mattison) Rudd and the last surviving member of a large family who had been prominent in the Town of Hoosick area. He observed his 90th milestone on Dec 4, 1961.
Other organizations he served included Van Rensselaer Lodge F & AM, the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs and the Order of the Ameranth. His counsel was sought on historical and agricultural matters as well as in politics.
His wife, the former Martha Harrison, died 30 years ago. One of his sons, Earl, died in World War I, and another son Sanford, was killed in an automobile accident at Boyntonville five years ago. Mr. Rudd had resided with his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Mary Rudd, on the Rudd farm on the Hoosick Falls-Bennington Road.
Survivors besides his daughter-in-law include two grandchildren, Mrs. Chester DuMond of Ulster Park, N.Y. and Douglas H. Rudd of Saginaw, Mich.; also four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 2 pm at the residence and at 2:30 in the First Baptist Church, Hoosick. The Rev. Everett E. Gardner is now minister of the Madison Avenue Baptist Church in Albany. Burial will be in Hoosick Rural Cemetery.
Friends may call at the residence tonight and Friday afternoon and evening.
