She was born on Oct. 9, 1904, in Omega, Okla. She grew up on a farm and always reminisced of the many happy days she harvested crops with her parents, Davis and Ella Belle Armstrong. Ruth attended Custer City High School and went on to graduate magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Oklahoma Baptist University.
Ruth became a school teacher and married G.B. Smith in 1927. Together they operated a farm while both taught school. After the "Dust Bowl" of the early 1930s, Ruth and G.B. moved to Wenatchee in 1934. They had three children, Donald Davis, Ida Faye and H. Glen Smith.
During the Big Depression of the 1930s, Ruth always fed the hungry young men who showed up at her door looking for a sandwich and a cup of coffee. She also helped others by raising Victory Gardens during World War II.
In 1946, the Smiths moved to Ellensburg, where they operated a farm. Ruth also worked as a food service supervisor for Central Washington University for more than 20 years. Ruth enjoyed gardening, especially flowers, as well as hiking and rock hunting. She became an avid oil painter, and many family members have her paintings. Ruth lived in Ellensburg until the death of her husband in 1978. She then moved to Los Gatos, Calif., to be near family members.
For the past two years, Ruth has lived in Oregon, where her daughter, Ida, took care of her.
Ruth was always concerned for and helped others. She was very attentive to her children and grandchildren. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Wenatchee and Ellensburg.
She is survived by her children, Ida Lawrence of Talent, Ore.; Glen Smith of Martinez, Calif.; and Don Smith of Penryn, Calif; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
