Daughter of Hickok Hubbell Sprague and Sarah "Sally" Bennett. She married Harvey Johnson on June 17, 1840 in Edgar Co., IL. They had Martha, Newton, George, Sarepta, Allen, Rosa Anna & Alpharetta. Harvey died in Dec 1870 and almost exactly a year later, Nora married Daniel Mix on Dec 14, 1871. It seems she and Daniel did not stay married. They were still married in 1880, but by 1885 she is living with her son, Allen Johnson, in Anderson County. She has kept the last name Mix and lists herself as widowed (even though Daniel is still alive in Woodson County at the time). She is either referring to her first husband, Harvey Johnson, or more likely, she uses "widowed" because divorce was considered taboo and quite shameful. It wasn't uncommon for people to list themselves as widowed rather than divorced on the censuses.

No one really knows how her first or middle names are spelled. They seem to be spelled differently in every source. It seems that even she and her family couldn't decide on a spelling, as even they spell it various ways at various times. The more common and closely related variations are Rohamma/Ruhamma/Ruhamah. I've even seen some researchers spell it Rhummal. However, I do not think that variation is very accurate because the "l" in the word bears no resemblance to other more commonly used spellings and I've never seen a source that indicates the "Rhummal" spelling or any variation of it.

She did not go by her first name. Usually she is listed under her middle name, but even that has been spelled in different ways. In the Illinois marriage record, she is listed as Loruhannah. She's usually listed in the census as Larahannah or Lourhannah (or other odd variations). Ultimately, I believe the correct spelling is Lourhannah. This is the handwritten spelling used in the family bible where her birthdate and deathdate are recorded.

Finally, even though she is normally listed under her middle name, she didn't even use it as her everyday name. Judging by her obituary, she apparently went by the nickname Nora.

SOURCE: Colony Free Press, Thursday, Jan 24, 1889:
"Died: At the residence of her son-in-law, Wm. Bain, in this township, on Monday morning Jan 21st, Mrs. Nora Mix, in the 67th year of her age. The funeral services were held at the Liztown school house on Tuesday, being conducted by Rev J.M. Jones, and she was buried in the Deer Creek Cemetery. The old lady had been sick with a complication of diseases for some time and her death was not unexpected. She was the mother of Mr. Allen Johnson, Mrs. Wm. Bain and Mrs. Sarepta Rhodes, and a lady highly respected by all who knew her. We tender our sincere sympathies with the bereaved."

Cody's Notes: Deer Creek Cemetery's name was changed to Mount Zion Cemetery in later years. One of the last mentioned burials I can find there is in 1929 and, at that time, it is still called Deer Creek, so I don't know exactly when the name changed to Mt Zion.

Most of the graves at Deer Creek (Mt Zion) Cemetery are no longer marked with headstones. Apparently destroyed over the years & the stones have been disposed of perhaps? Her grave is one that has no marker, so there's no way to know exactly where in the cemetery it is located. Proof of her burial there is her obituary listed in the Colony Free Press Newspaper (see above).
