1837-1845 Jasper,Shelby San Augustine Counties. He arrived in Texas in September 1837, a married man. Location of resultant land claim for 1280 acres in Uoshur County. ( file 347 ) near Jno H. and Rebecca Walker, as well as 1851-52 residence in Houston County suggest this is the correct Joseph Walker. It is believed he was not married when he came to Texas, but lied to obtain more land. There were no children born before 1844. He was thought to be cutting timber in Jasper County in 1838 with his brother Phillip Walker. He became a citizen of the Republic of Texas on 13 Aug.1838. He is also associated with Shelby County, home of James and Martha Walker in 1845.

Joseph Walker had fled Shelby County in 1841 after a shooting incident involving the Moderators and regulators in which he killed two men in a gun fight. They were after his brother Phillip and had made the mistake of telling Joseph to tell Phillip to meet them. Joseph gave his brother Phillip the wrong time of three oclock and met the two men at two oclock.

1845---1848 Upshur County, Joseph Walker had land here surveyed in

1845-- and 1846, and also a slave distribution from his fathers estate was filed here.He was living here in 1847 when all residents became citizens of the United States.

1848---Navarro County (part which became Tarrant Co.)--Josephine Walker born February 1848 according to her death certificate.

1850---Feb-Navarro County the portion that became Hill County in 1853.James H. Walker's birth.

June of 1850 ---they were in Leon County which was founded in 1846 out of Robertson County

1851---1855--Houston County founded 1837.Thomas Ira and California born here

1853 ----and 1855. Joseph Walker is listed as a resident of Crockett in 1852. Possibly met the Yarbroughs by this time as their names appear of the records of Gillespie Mercantile business in Rancho,Gonzales County Texas with Swanson's in 1853.

1856 ----Gillespie County Texas--California states she was born here.

1856---1857--Parker County founded out of Bosque and Navarro Counties.Land commission records show Joseph had land here on aug.26 1856. It is thought he left here when trouble with the Indians broke out.

1859----Johnson County founded in 1854. Joseph's brother Phillip Walker had been living here since 1855---- Mary Elizabeth Walker was born here on October 15,1859 as stated by her granddaughter Annette Ludeman.Joseph left Johnson County shortly after the birth Mary in October, as he is in Aascosa county by fall of 1859. His first wife Mary Walker died here in 1860.

1860---McMullen county,Yarbrough bend and Atascosa Co.Pleasanton

Aug.5,1861---Joseph Walker served in the McCullen county Militia, 3rd. Frontier District. Major James M. Hunter. Served during the war between the states.Muster Roll No. 45 Archives,Texas

1865---August 19,1865 Comanche Indiana raided McMullen County seizing horses from the Askins, Walkers, Musgraves,Lanes, Lawhorns and John Hines. During the skirmish, John Hines was killed. A man by the name of Ellis (from Atascosa) Lite Lawhorn, Moses Pierce, frank and William J. Askins, Joe, Bud and Tom Walker all participated. 1865 November 9----Granted to Alonzo Van Oden, grandson 150 head of cattle in consideration of love nad affection Atascosa County Texas No. 576.

1870 December 12,----Sold to William Carroll Walker( brother-in-law) a lot and house for $175.00 in McMullen County, Colfax previously Dog Town. Lot # 3 Block 14 on corner of River St. and Loew St.

1871----28 October State of texas vS J.W. Walker, Assault with intent to commit murder on Delia Alford--August 22,1871. Witnesses Delia Alford,Ada Alford(married Lewis Walter Snowden) Warner P.Crain, J.S.Franklin,James Martin Sr. Green alford,Mary Franklin,William B. Morgan, Joseph Walker requested that Timothy Oden of LaSalle County be called as a material witness

1872-----26 Feb.1872 Wyatt Parker, william Walker and Dr. George A Dilworth acted as surities Texas VS. Joseph W.Walker Assault with intent to commit murder on J.S.Franklin on Aug.24,1871 Witnesses, Mrs Laura Alexander,Green Alford,Thos maynard,Mary Franklin,Timothy Oden Same surities. 1872 March 7---Live Oak County State of Texas VS J.W.Walker: Assult with intent to commit murder on J.S. Franklin on 24 August 1871. Witnesses Mary Franklin,Warner Crain,Tim Oden. Disposition of all above unknown.

1872 November 18-----Joseph and Amanda sell all their cattle, branded variously for $2000 cash and a promissory note for $ 10,500.. Sold to James Lowe. McMullen County Marks and brands Vol.1

1873 May 19-----Joseph Walker files a claim Petition # 355 Vol. 44 pages 241-333 before the robb Commission stipulating that in 1866 he established a ranch in McMullen County Texas with 2,000 head of cattle and 150 head of horses. Between that time and the date of this claim. He sold 750 cattle and 42 horses. Calculating increases through breeding and known sales, Joseph Walker judges that he should have on hand 12,828 cattle and 800 horses. But in fact has only 500 cattle and 50 horses and argues that the remainder were stolen by armed Mexicans and Indian bands and carried into Mexico and there sold with the consent and protection of the Mexican Goverment authorities. He placed the value on the missing stock at $ 153,360.00( $ 10. per head cattle and $40. per horse) Henry Wheeler, James Irvin, Stephen W. Walker all provided depositions. 66 years later on December 11,1946 the United States Goverment decided this claim, the following was determined. He should have on hand in 1873 5,000 head of stock less 1,125 loss from natural causes, or $ 3,375 one half being chargeable to Mexico. 70 percent of which fell during the jurisdictional peroid, and a claim of $ 11,816 was approved on December 11,1946. Probate was on May 13,1948 to distribute the proceeds amongst the heirs.

1873--- July 28,1873 Joseph signed a petition for the formulation of McMullen county James Lowe Vs Joseph Walker failure to pay for purchases from J.S.Franklin between 1 Jan.1870 and July of 1871. Right to payment transferred to Lowe--balance $ 394.55.

1875 September 17---John M.Moore (Amanda's Half Brother) mortgages his horse wagon,four mules,6 head of stock for six months and in receipt of $ 250.@@ 12.5 interest Book D page 469 McMullen county.

1875 December 31---For $4000. consideration paid by Joseph (Buddie) Walker, Jerome Walker, Melvina Walker, Rebecca Walker and Virginia esile Walker, all of McMullen County sells to them a stock of horses with a specific brand.

1879 Jan.13---Amanda and Joseph sell horse stock to C. L. Hering for $410. of specific brand.

1879 Jan.13---Joseph Walker, agent and natural guardian of the minor children, Jerome,Joseph Henry,Melvina,Rebecca E,Virginia Alice,Amanda A, and Lenora, for $ 4,490. sold to C.L.Herring of Live Oak County horse stock running in McMullen and adjoining counties of specific brands cited. Live Oak County Deed of Trust Records Book a. page 227.

1881 December 20---Indictment for selling intoxicating liquor in violation of local option--$ 250.00 fine McMullen county Dist. Court.

FAMILY STORY OF THE WALKER BROTHERS COMING TO TEXAS.

" Joseph Henry Walker the second son of James Hemphill and MarthaTelford, joined his brother Phillip who was already in Texas in 1835. They were working in the timber business. Each being young men looking for a future in Texas they were eager to join the Texas revolution. Available reports show Joseph received orders as did his brother Phillip to join the troops in the Alamo, where his cousins Jacob and Asa were already entrenched with the other defenders.Joseph started for the Alamo as had his brother Phillip,each receiving word the Alamo had fallen. Josephs orders were to return towards Nacodoches, being where he had departed from. Phillip was ordered to join Sam Houston. Joseph received a land grant for being in the Texas Revolution. as he was not in any of the three primary battles,The Alamo,Goliad or San Jacinto, his grant was for 360 acres. Phillip Walker being in the battle of San Jacinto received 1,400 acres."

Montgomery County Texas shows a Joseph Walker as Justice of the Peace in 1843. He was in Upsur County in 1847,Houston county in 1851, Leon county in 1852,Parker County in 1857,Johnson County in 1859 and McMullen County from 1860 until he died in 1888. He lived a long life and had many children. Seven by his first wife Mary Walker, and eleven by his second wife Amanda Yarborough, who was only seventeen when they married. From their many descendents you hear theirs was a hard but happy life together.Amanda married Joseph against her mothers wishes in 1864, her and Joseph ran off after dark and were married by the Justice of the Peace on May 2,1864 in Pleasanton Texas. Joseph a widower was 46 years of age and already the father of seven children ages 4 years to 20 years from his first marriage to Mary Walker. Mandy is only 17 younger than some of his children. But theirs was a good marriage and lasted until Josephs death in 1888 twenty four years later and elevan children they lived together.
