A FATAL SHOOTING
MATTHEW GEREN WAS SHOT AND INSTANTLY KILLED MONDAY MORNING.

Monday morning about 11 o'clock, Matthew Geren was shot in the head with a shot gun in the hands of Fred Geren, his nephew, in the latter's home northeast of this city, death resulting instantly, as practically the entire top of his head was blown away.
Mr. Geren had been asked to keep off the place by his nephew because of family trouble. That morning, about 10 o'clock the deceased left this city following the railroad track east, when he cut across country north to his nephew's home. When arriving at the farm, he was observed by Mrs. Geren, who suspected trouble and locked the doors. She then called the Loomis home where Fred had been papering but who was returning home at the time. After trying to force entrance through the kitchen door, "Mat" attempted to get into the home thru a window. Fred arrived home about thisw time and asked his uncle to return to town as he did not want any trouble with him. Fred then went to the kitchen door and asked his wife to open it, "Mat" forcing his way in first. Feeling trouble was not to be door, but never picked it up at this time, when "Mat" commenced abusing his wife and drew a 32 calibre pistol from his pocket and pointed it directly at her. Fred asked him not to do that, when he whirled around and said he would get him first. Fred then grabbed the gun and fired it near the hip, with result noted above.
No blame whatever can be placed on Fred for what occurred, it being just a matter of protecting himself and those he loved and any man would have done the same thing under the same circumstances.
The deceased was born in LaPrarie, Ill. April 17, 1864, his age being 65 years, 11 months and 14 days.
The brother, Luke Geren, of St. Joseph was here to attend the funeral, which was held Tuesday afternoon, short services being conducted at the Meadville cemetery by Rev. Hawk.
ATTENDED FUNERAL
Mr. and Mrs. D. L. Lewis, Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Lamkin, Mr. and Mrs. James German, Mrs. Grant Kelsey, Mrs. N.C. Barnes.
