J.C. Abelein moved his family from Anamoose, North Dakota to Sidney in 1908.

J.C. Abelein and his two sons, Carl and Arthur, arrived in Mondak, March 17 1908 with an emigrant car of equipment. The goods were taken across the Missouri River to Java on the ice. The very next day the ice broke up! If the equipment had remained on the Mondak side of the river they would have been delayed many days in starting for Sidney. All of the equipment had to be brought to the farm home west of Sidney via horses and wagons.

Having bought new land it was necessary to erect buildings, make fences and dig a well. The sod had to be plowed before grain could be seeded.
John had five children from his first marriage. The three younger came to Montana with the family; Carl, Arthur and Myrtle, who later became Mrs. E. J. McCullough.

In 1907 he married Charlotte Gebo, a widow. Charlotte had three children , Arthur, Celar and Etta, who later married Matt Obergfell.
John and Charlotte helped to start a school in West Brorson. In trying to meet requirements for a school the first short term was held in a small building on the Abelein farm. After that the school was established at West Brorson.

John was a charter member of the Farmer's Mercantile Elevator at Sidney and was a board member a few years. John and Charlotte were members of Lonsdale Methodisht Church in Sidney.

They lived on the farm for 32 years. In 1940 John sold the farm to his son, Arthur. They then moved to a home in Sidney. Charlotte died in November, 1942. John died in March 1946. Both are interred in the Sidney Cemetery.
