Alice Mae (Allie) was born in 1868 in Alexandria Bay, New York. Her parents were James Nutt Combs (Irish descent, born in Danville, Quebec) and Nancy Caroline Wilcox (English descent, born in Brooksville Ontario). James and Nancy had 9 children. James had 3 children from a former marriage. Nancy became a widow with 9 children and they had to work as soon as they were able. Allie worked for a Captain Dodge family at the Mallory Light House at the age of 16. In the 1880's two of Allie's brothers and their wives moved to Detroit, Minnesota, and Allie moved with them. There she met and married John Charles Abelein. Her obituary read: "The death of Mrs. John C Abelein which occurred in Detroit on Tuesday, March 17th, is one of the saddest evets which we have been called upon to chronicle. Cut down in the prime of her useful life a happy home is blighted and five small children, the eldest only nine years of age, was highly esteemed by all who knew her, and it is needless to say that the deep sympathy of the community is extended to the afflicted husband and children. The funeral services were held at the M.E. church in Detroit last Thursday, conducted by the Rev. D.E. Wilson. Interment was made at the cemetery at McHugh. "
