Son of John Philip & Susan Caroline Wittich Lyne, a successful merchant family, and the husband of New Jersey-born Hannah A. Ludlow Lyne.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, August 5, 1862, with Co. A, 130th Pa Inf, at the rank of private. Wounded at the battle of Antietam on the assault on Bloody Lane, he was ordered to the rear (presumably Harrisburg) for hospitalization but never reported and was not heard from again.
