Hiram was the son of Joseph Kaiser Newton and his 2nd wife, Jane McCorcle McVey.
He married on October 5, 1862, Peoria County, Illinois, to Minerva Amelia Ives.
He was a Civil War veteran, Company D, 112th Illinois Volunteer Infantry.
