page 80 - "Death of Two Confederate Soldiers"
Mr. Billy PARKER, an old time resident of Jimmie's Creek in Marion County, Arkansas, informs me that Sam MADELL and Bailey BALES, two Confederate soldiers of Co. A, Fourteenth Arkansas Infantry, were killed in the Ballenger Bluff on the south side of White River, two miles above where Pace's Ferry is now. The enemy were from Missouri and Bailey BALES carried a flint lock rifle and snapped it at the Federal commander before BALES was shot down. Both bodies were buried on Jimmie's Creek.

Approximately 1992, Troy Massey of the Son's of the Confederate Veteran's - had this stone and the stone of Bailey Bales installed in honor of these 2 men's service. They are not buried there, however, the markers were put up here according to Troy Massey "I had the local monument dealer make Mr. Madell a marker so I could place both in the cemetery side by side since both were killed together. This cemetery where they are buried has other members of their unit close by which I felt appropriate."

Since then I have learned -" There is an account of two Union captains and their men coming into northeast Marion County. Two of the men they killed were killed by Captain Piland's group three miles down the White River from the Little North Fork
This would be at Ballenger's Bluff. I'm almost certain the two were Bailey Bales and Sam Madell (Madwell.) it's in the book ?The War of the Rebellion, published in 1896 by ?the U.S. War Department, on pages 116-117.

Sallee went up to Musick's Creek on Feb. 18, so it appears the incident at Ballenger's happened on the 17th. Ballenger's Bluff is now known as Tie Chute Bluff by some, or as the western part of Frost Point. White River is no longer here...it has become Bull Shoals Lake, but the bluff is still above the water level. The bluff is about three miles northwest of the creek known as Jimmie's or Jimmy Creek.
