In 1855 the family moved to Kansas Territory, but moved back to Illinois at the start of the American Civil War in 1861. On August 1, 1862, 31 year-old Edmond, who was married and father of two, joined the U.S. Army to fight in the Civil War. He served as a wagoner with Company I of the 85th Illinois U.S. Infantry and was promoted to Corporal then to Lieutenant. He mustered out at the end of the war in 1865.
