The HAMMONIA was built as the Hamburg-America Line's response to Norddeutscher Lloyd's express steamship ELBE. 28 February 1883, maiden voyage, Hamburg - Havre - New York. 10 November 1889, last voyage, Hamburg - Southampton - New York. 1889, purchased by the French Line and renamed VERSAILLES. 1914, scrapped at Genoa.

OBIT: Born in the village of "Ramsenthal [Haus Nº49], Landkreis Bayreuth, Bayern" (Bavaria, Germany). Listed as 4th child, 3rd son (on his birth record ["Geburtzekunde"] obtained from the Pastor at the Evangelical Lutheran church in Harsdorf, Bavaria). Historical name in Germany is (to this day) spelled with two "NN"'s. For reasons that are unknown, the legal spelling of the name in America became "KUHMAN" with but one "N". The name is pronounced as "Key-ooh-mahne" equivalent to the German spelling of "KÜHMANN", or "KUEHMANN". Friedrich came to America in January of 1885, at the age of 21. I have (grandson, Robert Charles Kuhmann) found no record of a passage through Ellis Island, so I shall suppose that another port of entry was chosen: perhaps New Orleans, via the Mississippi River, and the Illinois River, to Ottawa? Fred was naturalized as a U.S. citizen on 30-Mar-1891. Resided Oswego, Kendall Co., Illinois where he worked as a blacksmith. He eventually bought property in Kendall Twp., to the East of Pavilion Road, west of Yorkville, Kendall Co., Illinois where he operated a dairy farm until his demise (due to prostate issues). He also owned a home "on the hill" south of East Van Emmon Street (in-town), at Yorkville. "Fred" married Miss Alice May Peterson of Chicago, daughter of John C. Peterson (some sources say Johann Carl Pederssohn) and Bertha Gielow, on 2-Mar-1908 (per Kendall Co. IL. marriage records). He died in Aurora, Kane Co., Illinois. Buried: Pavilion Cemetery, Pavilion Road, Kendall Co., Yorkville, Illinois USA. Friedrich was a Mason and member of the Kendall Lodge, #471 A.F. & A.M. located in Yorkville, IL.
