The son of Benjamin and Mary, nee Paddock, Harris who settled in Sullivan County ca. 1817. He was their sixth child, but their first to be born in their new home as well as being the first white child born in Fairbanks Township.

Joel's first wife was Lydia Ransford Harris, whom he married 6 September 1838 in Sullivan County. She was the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth, nee Medsker, Ransford.

They were the parents of Ira Harris (b. 1839), Amanda Harris Lawson (b. 1941), Mary A. Harris (b. 1844), Alvina Harris Strain (b.1846), Sarah J. Harris Trueblood (b.1850), Louisa Harris (b.1853 d. 1871), James Tyra Harris (b. 1858), Samuel M. Harris (b. 1863) and Elizabeth Harris (b. 1865).

Lydia Ransford Harris died 27 January 1879, and on 1 April 1880 Joel married Elizabeth Patton in Sullivan County. She was the daughter of Calvin and Mary, nee Lester, Patton and was 40 years younger than her husband.

Joel and Elizabeth were the parents of Joel Harris Jr. (b. 1883), John Patton Harris (b. 1887) and Cyrus Andrew Harris who was born 17 October 1890 - three months after his father's death.

Joel Harris and his family can be found in Turman Township in census records from 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880. It is important to note that his widow Elizabeth remarried and can be found in the 1900 census in Turman Township with her second husband, Martin O. Lucas, as well as her three sons - Joel, John P. and Cyrus A. Also listed are two more children by Lucas - Laura (b. 1892) and Everett (b. 1895).

It is this contributor's belief that Elizabeth is not buried with her first husband as alledgedly indicated on the grave marker (note: there is no death date for her) and most likely the marker would be considered a pre-need one for her. I am presently researching where Martin Lucas is buried and I also have notes from another Harris researcher that Elizabeth was buried in the Gordon Nebraska cemetery where her son Joel Jr and stepdaughters Alvina and Sarah are buried.
