Josiah Arthur was born October 11, 1827, in Jefferson Township, Coshocton County, Ohio, the son of Elias and Sophia Freese Arthur, pioneers of Coshocton County from Frederick County, Maryland. His grandparents were John and Anna Maria Schrupp Freese. On March 1, 1847, in Coshocton County, he married Mary Jane Pettit, a native of Pennsylvania. They were the parents of 7 children: Sophia Elizabeth, Benjamin Franklin, Mary Ellen, Melvina, Walter D., George Emery and Anne Mabel Iowa Arthur. Josiah and his family moved to Iowa County, Iowa, around 1854, settling near Millersburg. He passed away September 17, 1879, in English Township, Iowa County, Iowa, and was buried in Millersburg Cemetery, Millersburg, Iowa County, Iowa.
