NEW WINDSOR - Dean Foster, 88, of New Windsor, died Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at Mercer County Nursing Home in Aledo.

Service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Peterson-Wallin-Knox Funeral Home in Alpha. Burial will be IN Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens in Galesburg, where graveside military services will be conducted. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be left to Mercer County Nursing Home, Tri-County Ambulance or Beacon of Hope Hospice. He was born Jan. 17, 1921, in Hermon, a son of Homer and Lena Thurman Foster. He graduated from Maquon High School and married Helen Elaine Simkins on Oct. 25, 1941, in Palmyra, Mo.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Dean was employed at the Blue Bell Factory in Abingdon. He was later employed as an engineer for the Michigan Wisconsin Pipeline in New Windsor, retiring May 29, 1982.

He was a member of New Windsor American Legion Post 484, Rio Masonic Lodge 685 and Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Moline. He was a former member of the Mercer County Board, a former director of the New Windsor Fair and Rodeo, a precinct committeeman, and served as mayor of the village of New Windsor.

Dean was an avid Cardinals fan, played cards and enjoyed mowing and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; a daughter, Pam (Bob) Bateman of Sherrard; two granddaughters, Emily (Eddie) Bradshaw of Alpha, and Beth (Phil) Brinkmeyer of Rowlett, Texas; two great-granddaughters, Delainey and Ella Bradshaw; two brothers, Dale Glen Foster of Galesburg and Rollie Eugene Foster of Maquon; two special 'girls', Shirley Brown of St. Jacob, and Melissa Hartman of Matherville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
