James F. Hurt, 88 of Elkhart, Indiana died May 17, 2009 @ 6:55 A.M. at Elkhart Hospice House after a brief illness. He was born on February 12, 1921 in Handy, Missouri to Russell H. and Margret Emmaline (Green) Hurt. He married Sophie Nichols on May 3, 1941. She died March 10, 2002. He then married Theresa Thrailkill on December 25, 1994.
She survives along with four sons; James Theodore (Sharon) Hurt of Marine, Illinois, Dennis Ray Hurt of St. Louis, Missouri, David Eugene Hurt of Phoenix, Arizona and Rick Lee Hurt of Niles, Michigan, five daughters; Beulah Mae Hooker of Niles, Michigan, Jean (James) Ray of Jackson, Tennessee, Diana Lynn (Thom) Ross of South Bend, Indiana, Donna Marie Hurt of Louisville, Kentucky and Jackie (Ron) Clay of Elkhart, a step-daughter, Deanna Sue Wiltfong of Oregon,two stepsons, David (Jennifer) Arnett of New Mexico and Jason Handshoe of South Bend, Indiana, 24 Grandchildren, 53 Great Grandchildren, 9 Great Great Grandchildren, one brother, Calvin Hurt of Denver, Colorado, two sisters, Della Wells of Melbourne, Arkansas and Helen Chronister of Vanburen, Missouri. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara LaDine High, granddaughter, Melissa M. Hurt, a great grandson, brothers Burley, Henry and Roy Hurt and two sisters, Lida High and LuLa Dickson.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 P.M. Friday at Stemm Lawson Peterson Funeral Home, 1531 Cobblestone Boulevard, Elkhart with the Reverend Larry Kurtz of Faith United Methodist Church officiating. Friends may call two hours prior to services. Burial will follow at Rice Cemetery with the United States Navy and DAV Post 19 providing military graveside honors.
Mr. Hurt retired from Jessen Tool Manufacturing in Elkhart. He loved to hunt, fish and square dance. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. Memorial contributions may be given to the family. An online guestbook may be accessed at www.stemmlawsonpeterson.com
