Mr. Baetch was baling straw in a field near his home with a round baler attached to a tractor. He stopped the tractor when the baler apparently became clogged and was apparently attempting to make adjustments on the large baler when one of his arms caught in the machine and he was pulled into it. C. J. Baertch Victim of Baler Accident
Chris Baertch, 74, Soldier, was killed Friday afternoon in a hay baler accidnet on his farm two miles east and a mile south of Soldier.
There were no witnesses to the accident and it is thought Baertch was caught in the baler while trying to make adjustments to the machine without turning it off.
Baertch had left his home to go to the field at about 2:30 . He was found by a daughter who went ot look for him at 6 when he failed to return.
He had made several rounds with the baler before the accident occurred. The machine was a roto-baler and Baertch was baling straw. One of his arms was caught in the machine and tore off.
Services were at 10 a.m. Monday at the Methodist church at Soldier, for Christian John Baertch.
He was born November 13, 1893 in Atchison County and spent most of his life in the Soldier community. He was a member of the Soldier Methodist church and Circleville Lodge No. 20, AF&AM. He was a farmer many years.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs Beulah Baertch at home; three daughters, Mrs Sue Bader, Urbana, Illinois, Mrs Mary Rumsey, DeKalb, Illinois and Mrs Caroline Clowers, Dayton, Ohio; three sisters, Mrs Sophia Spiker and Mrs Anna Stachelbeck, both of Holton and Mrs Addie Murray, Topeka; a brother, Carl Baertch, Holton; and 10 grand children.
Burial was in Soldier cemetery, Memorial contributions may be made to Soldier Methodist church.
