A POEM
Dillard London, 1909, Northside High School, Fort Smith, Arkansas
I stood upon a lonely cliff and watched
The waves dash high upon a rocky shore,
Beating with mighty force, but all in vain,
The rocks stood firm and silent as before.
And then I thought of lives which I have known,
Of weary, nerve-racked souls who fought in vain,
Thinking with their frail force to break the rock
In which grim destiny doth reign.
