Clara M. Wilhelm furthest left figure in profile in shadow, laughing with unknown girlfriends about 1913-15, before her marriage in 1916 at age 19. Clara had a pronounced overbite, and was very short-waisted, both features visible in this photo. Her hair was a beautiful deep brown, as were her eyes. The two girls sitting shoulder to shoulder in the furthest right position appear to be sisters. Looking closely, one can see that all of the girls have red or dark pink carnations along with a tag of some sort pinned to their dresses.

Clara Magdalene Wilhelm in the May Queen parade Chillicothe, Illinois in about 1912-13 when Clara was 15 or 16. Just her head is visible in the back of the wagon, looking straight at the photographer. Note the Model T Ford following the carriage. Clara was not the Queen, but rather first runner-up. She always said that various friends told her privately that the voting had been rigged by promoters of the girl who won the Queen position.

The entire Wilhelm family gathered for this group photo in about 1925-30, when the youngest Clara was 28-33 years old. It was most likely taken in the yard of the Chillicothe, Illinois, farm of Anton and Mary Anne Thome Wilhelm (the old couple in the photo) on West Rome Rd. just outside of town.

Their adult children, from left to right, are: Frank (the oldest), Francis, Alfred, Clarence, Clara (the youngest), and Ed.

Frank and Ed, the two oldest, had a different mother (Katie Dornberger) than Mary Anne Thome who was the mother of the other four.

Clarence Paul Wilhelm

Clarence was his sister Clara Magdalene Wilhelm's favorite brother. The two siblings were only a couple years apart in age, and enjoyed many happy childhood memories together. By 1916, when Clara married at age 19, they were separated forever.

Clara came to live in this home as a 19 year old newlywed in 1916. This house is still standing in 2013, and is owned by Boylan descendants of Clara's sister-in-law Ella Boylan Staab. Clara spent nine years here, and these early years when she was healthy (prior to the chronic lung problems she developed in her 30's) were some of the happiest of her life. Clara gave birth in the house to her first four children, between 1919 and 1924 - first Johnnie, followed by Marjorie, Mary, and Paul. In 1925, Clara and her husband Archie both contracted tuberculosis, spending months together in a sanitarium. Because Archie lost so much working time the home was lost. Their fifth and final child Josephine "Jo" was born in a second Boylan home up the hill from the main house in 1926. IN THIS PHOTO, IN THE SHADE UNDER THE TREE ON THE LEFT, IS A YOUNG GIRL, THOUGHT TO BE MARJORIE IN ABOUT 1924-25 BEFORE ARCH AND CLARA LOST THE HOUSE. THE AUTOMOBILE VISIBLE ON THE LEFT WAS LIKELY THEIR CAR. They had made a trip to Colorado in the car when they were first married.
