Benjamin F. Atkins was born November 18, 1852 in Winnebago County, Illinois. He was the son of David W. and Clarissa (Doolittle) Atkins. He was five foot six and one half inches tall and had a light complexion.
MILITARY RECORD:
Enlisted May 7, 1898 at Deadwood, South Dakota. He served in Company "A" of the 3rd U. S. Cavalry. He was discharged as a private on September 8, 1898 when the regiment mustered out. He received a pension on Certificate No. 1,244,176.
He married August 15, 1878 in Saint Francis, Madison, Arkansas to Sarah Shepard. She had died prior to March 1927 when he submitted an application for admission to the Washington Veterans Home. He was 74 years old. Mr. Atkins declared that he had lived continously in the state since 1911 except when he was in the Territory of Alaska for 1913, 1914 and 1915.
He had a brother, Harry C. Atkins at Crystal Springs, Florida. He died at the age of 81 years on February 9, 1934 at the Home Hospital. Steltz & Sons were in charge of funeral arrangements.
