Rhoda Catherine Stephens the 8th of 12 children born to Rev. John Alvin Bramblett, Sr. and Jane Couch. Rhoda was born in Franklin Co., Georgia, shortly before her family moved to the Haley area of Bedford Co., TN. Her father was a farmer, a sawyer and the pastor of the Primitive Baptist Church.

Rhoda married John Patton Stephens in December 1851. John was the son of long time Mayor of Wartrace, Daniel Stephens and his 1st wife Nancy Couch. Rhoda and John had 10 children. They lived on a farm in Haley next to Rhoda's parents. After the death of Rhoda's parents, Rhoda and John bought the parents land from her father's Estate. They were members of the Primitive Baptist Church.
