REBECCA JANE BRAMBLETT CHILTON

Rebecca was the daughter of John Alvin Bramblett and Jane Couch. She was the 10th of 12 children (7 girls and 6 boys); born in Haley, Bedford Co., TN (southeast of Shelbyville). She was married to James Madison Chilton on Nov. 8,1857, when she was 23 years old.

Rebecca and James had 12 children, Elmore D., twins Virginia C. (Jennie) and Walter Bramblett, John Alvin (Jack), twins Emma E. and Eleanor Ann (Ella), Ada Theodocia, James Newton (Newt), Miriam Edith, Eliza Yates, Maud Evelyn and Arthur Garfield. Emma E. died at 5 mons. old, and her burial place is undetermined.

The family moved from the Haley, TN, area about 1875 or 76 to a farm in Marshall Co. bordering Duck River in what was at the time the Verona community that he had purchased in about 1872-73.

Rebecca lived almost 25 years after James died. During her later years, she would stay with her daughters, Jennie and Edith, in Nashville, TN. She died while at the home of Jennie. There are many pictures of Grandma Rebecca in the years after 1895, but none that we have seen when she was young.

Dearest Mother thou hath left us.
Heare our loss we deeply feel.
But tis God that has hereafter,
