C. Louis Behrens, Suicide, Fires Two Bullets Into His Forehead

Crazed with pain resulting from a two day severe illness of eryalpelas (sic) and while the nurse who had been taking care of him had absented herself from the room, C. Louis Behrens fired two bullets into his forehead last night at 9 o'clock at his home 1630 1/2 West Locust Street, and died 50 minutes later without regaining consciousness. He left a letter in which he said he did not want to be sent to the hospital because of his illness and thought death would be preferable.

No intimation of his rash act had been given by the deceased and when the revolver shots attracted the attention of the frightened nurse she rushed back into the room and found that Behrens was then past recall. He did not regain consciousness after firing the shots. At the time of the shooting, he was suffering greatly from the pain and his fever was 105.

The deceased had resided in Davenport about 40 years. He was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany April 22, 1866. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Ida Kimball of the Frey flats 210 /2 West Fourth Street and Mrs. Rudolph Topp, 734 West Seventeenth Street. Coroner Rudolph has been notified and will probably hold an inquest tomorrow morning at the Runge undertaking establishment. The funeral has been set for Thursday afternoon at 2 O'clock from the undertaking parlors with interment at Oakdale cemetery.
