Popular Young Man Succumbs to Brights Disease After Long Illness.
Mr. Burtis L. Buchanan, third son of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Buchanan, passed away at the home of his parents on Mint street yesterday morning at 4:30 o'clock after a period of declining health that had extended over a year and a half. In the Summer of 1914, Mr. Buchanan was traveling the New England States with headquarters in Boston for the Coca-Cola Company when the first symptoms of Bright's disease manifested themselves. He immediately resigned his position and consulted the foremost specialists of the country but all to no avail. He made two trips to Johns Hopkins Hospital for treatment but all that they could do was to give a little longer lease on life. Ten days ago he developed complications and his condition quickly became critical. For the past several days he has been in extremis.
Mr. Buchanan was 32 years of age and is survived by his father and mother, five brothers and one sister, namely Dr. W. J. Buchanan of Washington, Dr. A. M. Buchanan, of McColl, S. C., Mr. H. E. Buchanan, Mrs. P. M. Edge, formerly Miss Jessie Buchanan, Mr. Carey P. Buchanan and Mr. H. Frank Buchanan, all of this city. He was a loyal member of the East Avenue A. R. P. Tabernacle and was always interested in the work of the church, especially among young men. He was widely popular in the city and generally admired for his sterling worth and fine traits of character.
The funeral will take place this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the residence and the services will be in charge of Rev. Dr. W. W. Orr, pastor of East Avenue Tabernacle assisted by Rev. Dr. A. A. McGeachy, pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church. The deacons of East Avenue Tabernacle will act as pallbearers. The interment will be at Elmwood.
