Gladys Swanson, 93, of Salmon, died May 14, 2009 at her daughter's home in Idaho Falls after a recent diagnosis of cancer.

She was born to John and Mamie Webb on July 30, 1915 near Salmon. They lived on a ranch three miles north of Salmon until she was three, when they moved to Boyle Creek, now Tower Creek. Later they moved to Salmon and then to the old Webb Ranch north or Salmon. She attended schools in Boyle Creek, Carmen, Salmon and Darby, Montana. She graduated from Salmon High School in 1934.

She married Kenneth Call in 1937 and their daughter, Janice, was born. Although they later divorced, she always maintained a loving relationship to the five other Call children. In 1947 she married Bernard Swanson and their daughter, Kathryn, was born in 1949. They lived in Cobalt until her husband was killed in a snow slide on February 29, 1956. After that she moved her children to Salmon and worked at McPherson's Dry Goods Store for 19 years and Arfmann's Four Seasons for eight years until she retired.

She became a longtime volunteer at the Lemhi County Museum, Meals on Wheels, and Rags & Wags. She belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary, Eagles Auxiliary, Lemhi County Humane Society and the Lemhi County Historical Society. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church since 1924.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathi (Stu) Sturdevant; four grandchildren, David Warren (Logan and Teagan), Jenni Horne (Aliyah and Nachelle), Ross (Amy) Gunning (Dave and Bob) and Kendra Gomes (Phoebe and Shawn); three stepchildren, Dave (Cathy) Call, Loren (Ruth) Call and Margaret Rytlewski; 21 step-grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Swanson; daughter, Janice; and sisters, Mae Gutzman and Faye Waldal; three stepsons; one stepdaughter and two step-grandchildren.

As the matriarch of the Webb Family, she will truly be missed, but her stories and love will endure.

Memorial services will be at the First Presbyterian Church in Salmon. Inurnment will be in Salmon Cemetery. Arrangements under the direction of Jones & Casey Funeral Home in Salmon.
