Ronald C. Hamaker, M.D., 64, of Zionsville, passed away Monday, May 30, 2005. He was born Aug. 23, 1940, in Marshall, Mich., the son of the late Alma (Weidendorf) and the late Kermit J. Hamaker. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and dedicated physician who is survived by his wife, Marjorie (Miller) Hamaker; a brother, Eugene D. Hamaker of Marshall, Mich.; daughters, Ronda (Hamaker) Williams M.D., Brenda (Hamaker) Jalaie; a son, Andrew D. Hamaker; granddaughters, Alicia N. Hamaker, Claire A. Williams, Rebecca A. Williams; and grandsons, Alec S. Hamaker and Peter K. Jalaie.

Ron grew up on a 600-acre farm raising beef cattle and sheep, graduated from Marshall High School in 1958, married Marjorie in 1962, attended the University of Michigan and graduated from the Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1965 and received the school's Empathy Award. Wayne State University also named him a Most Distinguished Alumnus in 1990. He continued his medical education as an intern and general surgery resident at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, Mich., and then attended residency in otolaryngology at Wayne State University from 1967 to 1970. Ron then served in the U.S. Army from 1970 to 1972 and received a distinguished service award at Fort Dix, N.J. Thereafter he completed a fellowship in head and neck oncology with John Conley in New York, N.Y.

After completing his fellowship, Ron took a full professorship at the Indiana University School of Medicine's Department of Otolaryngology, a position he held until 1979. He also served as vice chairman of the department staring in 1973. In 1979, he left to start his own highly successful private practice (Head and Neck Surgery Associates) in otolaryngology, with an emphasis on head and neck oncology. Ron went on to become internationally renowned in the field of head and neck oncology and built Head and Neck Surgery Associates into the largest private head and neck oncology practice in the country. He established the Midwest Center for Cosmetic Surgery, the Head and Neck Rehabilitation Institute and was instrumental in the establishment of the Surgery Center of Indianapolis and the Regional PET Scanner of Indianapolis. From 1981 to 1999, Ron trained 34 head and neck oncology surgeons as part of a fellowship he established at Head and Neck Surgery Associates.

In his 30 years of medical practice Ron pioneered the use of intra-operative radiation therapy for treatment of head and neck cancer, primary voice restoration and myotomy for laryngectomies, carotid interpositioning, use of the Blom-Singer voice prosthesis at the time of laryngectomy and holds a patent for a mechanical replacement heart valve designed while he was in residency. Ron's concern for his patients also led him to initiate "tumor clinics" where patients could meet with multiple specialists at one time. Ron also donated his time and medical expertise to the Murat Shrine Child Screenings as well as the Little Red Door. He was an honorary chairman of HealthNet Foundation.

Ron was a member of the Indianapolis Medical Society, the Indiana State Medical Society, American Association of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, the Triologic Society and was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He also was a member of the Murat Shrine, the Scottish Rite, the Royal Order of Jesters and York Lodge No. 410, Grand Rapids, Mich.
