Vernon Haylan Beavers, 81, of Longview, Texas, went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 11, 2009, surrounded by his loved ones. Services will be officiated by the Rev. David English on Thursday, May 14, 2009, at 2 p.m. in the Ford Chapel at First Baptist Church of Longview. Graveside services will follow at Roselawn Cemetery in Mineola, Texas, at 4 p.m.

He was born on July 31, 1927, in Brandon, Texas, to Wayland and Jessie Beavers. Vernon graduated from Paschal High School in Fort Worth, Texas. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Following his return from the war, he went to work for the Texas & Pacific Railroad in Mineola. He retired in 1987 after 38 years of service with the railroad. Vernon was a member of First Baptist Church Longview, served on the Texas Pacific Credit Union Board of Directors for several terms and was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 502 in Mineola for 53 years.

Vernon was a loving and supportive husband, father and PawPaw. He was married to his beloved wife Glenda Brogdon Beavers for 51 years. They enjoyed "antiquing" on their many travels together. His hobbies also included all kinds of outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing , gardening and taking care of his dogs. He enjoyed cooking and entertaining friends. For those who knew him, he was a man of true Christian generosity who loved to laugh and enjoyed life to the fullest.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, Wayland and Jessie Beavers; and his brothers, Eldon Beavers and Virgil Beavers. He is survived by his wife, Glenda Beavers of Longview, Texas; daughter, Deana Beavers of Lake Cherokee; daughter, Donna and son-in-law, Greg Meyer of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Mackenzie, Avery and Madeleine Meyer; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family would also like to thank the services of The Senior Registry owned by Mrs. Nell Secord for assisting them with so many wonderful caregivers. Maria Sartin came to our family over three years ago as a caregiver but became so much more. Her daily encouragement and support were such an inspiration to not only "Mr. B" but also to the entire family. Other caregivers who are also appreciated for their help include Bettye Thomas, Alicia Robinson and Geneva Johnson.
