When James William Penfold was born on October 5, 1849, in Chicago, Illinois, his father, Thomas George, was 31 and his mother, Elizabeth (Perry) Penfold, was 23 years. He married Emily Jane "Emma" Stevenson on 12 Dec. 1869, in Clinton County, Iowa, and they had nine children together. After his father died in 1888, James moved his family to Burlington, Colorado, where he opened a store called Northup and Penfold Grocery and General Store. Later in 1893 he built and opened a Flower Mill also in Burlington hiring a miller out of Kansas City. Shortly after the move to Colorado, the love of his life Emily died, He then married Emmaline Clayson about a year later in 1890 and they had two children together. In 1899 and 1901 James was elected as County Treasurer for the County of Kit Carson. In 1903 James help organize and build Burlington Telephone Company were he served as the Treasurer and the company had 24 customers, 13 shareholders, Son James Stevenson was the Manager. Also in that same year James decided to tear down and move the Flour Mill to Ft. Morgan were they rebuilt a much larger Mill under the name of Platte Valley Milling & Elevator Company. Now they made more than just flour with the flour they made a Hardwheat Flour, Salt, Grain, Feed and Hay. J.W. died on June 27, 1934, in Denver, Colorado, at a good age of 84 and was buried July 4, at Hillside Cemetery, Ft. Lupton, Colorado. 'Note
