Ronald Grant Kershaw, who fought for gay rights for Mormons, died Wednesday after a three-month bout with AIDS. He was 41.

Excommunicated from his church for being gay, he helped found the San Francisco chapter of Affirmation, a group of gay and lesbian Mormons. He later became executive director of the organization and served as its treasurer until his death.

Mr. Kershaw ran unsuccessfully last year for San Francisco assessor, finishing fourth behind Richard Hongisto, Wendy Nelder and Paul Schwenger.

He was a member of the Republican County Central Committee and a leader of several gay GOP groups, including Concerned Republicans for Civil Rights and the United Log Cabin Clubs of California.

Born and reared in Idaho, Mr. Kershaw was a Mormon missionary in France before getting a degree in accounting from Brigham Young University. He later earned an MBA in real estate from Golden Gate University. Four years ago, he founded the consulting firm Kershaw & Associates, working as an asset manager with troubled savings and loan institutions. He was a past president of the Institute of Internal Auditors and other professional groups.

Survivors include his partner of the past seven years, Craig Johnson; his parents, Dr. and Mrs. H. W. Kershaw of Blackfoot, Idaho; his brother, Gary; and sisters Launa Goodwin, Carol Gardner, Debra Zern, Teri LeBlanc and Kathi Kershaw, as well as many nieces and nephews.

After a private memorial service, a reception and celebration of Mr. Kershaw's life will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at 3533 21st Street, San Francisco. Donations are suggested to go to the AIDS Emergency Fund.
