Dr. Hyrum Watkins Kershaw, 93, of Blackfoot, Idaho passed away peacefully Thursday, October 8, 2015 at his home in the presence of family.
He was born January 4, 1922 in Saint Anthony, ID, the son of Annie Kershaw. He was later adopted by his aunt and uncle, Charles Elmer and Mabel Kinghorn Kershaw.
Hyrum was raised in the St. Anthony and Rigby areas. He graduated from Midway High School in Lewisville, ID. He attended the University of Idaho where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture. While attending school he boxed for three years and was awarded Pacific Coast Champion. Hyrum was the president of Alpha Zeta, an agriculture honor club. He later attended Washington State University where he received a degree in Veterinary Medicine.
On February 4, 1942, he married Mildred Hanks in the Logan LDS Temple. She preceded him in death on November 6, 1996.
Hyrum served his country in active duty from 1943-1945 in the Army Air Corp as a P-47 Fighter Pilot in the European-Mediterranean Theatre and flew 86 combat missions. He was awarded the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross and five Air Medals. He retired from the Air Force Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Hyrum built the Blackfoot Animal Clinic in 1957 retiring in 1981. He was a breeder of Angus cattle and Arabian horses. He served as President of the Idaho State Veterinary Medical Association.
He was involved in many civic activities including Boy Scouts of America and was awarded the Silver Beaver and inducted into the BSA Council Hall of Fame.
Hyrum served as president of Rotary Club.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served on the Blackfoot Stake High Council, Bishop of the Groveland 2nd Ward, Elder’s Quorum President and Executive Secretary.
He is survived by his children, Launa (Newell) Goodwin of Blackfoot, ID, Carol (Rick) Gardner of San Juan Capistrano, CA, Gary (Laurie) Kershaw of Broomfield, CO, Debra (Rick) Zern of Salt Lake City, UT, Teri (Greg) LeBlanc of Oceanside, CA and Kathi Kershaw of Boise, ID; sister, LaFaun Andrews of Shelley, ID; brother, George Kershaw of Bountiful, UT; 20 grandchildren; 58 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mildred; daughter, Karolyn Kay; son, Ronald; and brother, Larry Kershaw.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 17, 2015 at the Groveland LDS Chapel with Bishop Roger Stott conducting. The family will meet from 6-8 p.m. Friday, October 16, 2015 at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave., Blackfoot, Idaho and for one hour prior to the service at the church.
