PIONEER OF JANESVILLE SUMMONED
CHAS. GUTFLEISCH CAME TO THIS VICINITY IN 1878 SERVED AS MAYOR Elected as Chief Magistrate of Village For One Term
Charles Gutfleisch, pioneer clothing merchant and tailor of this community,passed to his final reward, Wednesday morning at his home here. The deceased was
the oldest living business man in our midst at the time of his death. He had been in failing health for the past six years and during the past year his visits with friends along the street became fewer and fewer as the months
passed.
Mr. Gutfleish was born on January 5th, 1856, in Strassburg, Germany, and he was seventy-seven years of age at the time of his death. On January 18th of the
current year, Mr. and Mrs. Gutfleisch celebrated their fifty-fourth wedding anniversary. Mr. Gutfleisch was sixteen years of age at the time he came from Germany to America and he had mastered the tailoring trade before leaving his native land.

Regarding Mr. Charles Gutfleisch, Child's History of Waseca County has the following: "A native of Germany, born in 1856, came to Waseca in 1872, here he worked at tailoring until 1878, when he moved to Janesville and carried on business for himself. He suffered from the 1887 fire, but soon after formed a copartnership with R. L. H. Britton. They erected a brick building and opened a
stock of men's clothing, Mr. Gutfleisch having charge of the tailoring department. He was a popular man and served one term as president of chief magistrate of the village."
On January 18th, 1878, he was joined in wedlock with Miss Ida Winnegar of Janesville. To this union four children were born, two of whom survive. Besides his widow, the deceased is survived by two daughters, Miss Lelia Gutfleisch of Eveleth and Mrs. D. R. Goldsmith of Sioux Falls, S. D. A sister, Mrs. Charles Hagedorn of Rochester, also survives.
The funeral services will be held at two-thirty Friday afternoon from the home and St. John's Episcopal Church with Rev. Rice conducting the services. The Masonic Lodge, of which he was a member for many years, will also take past in the services. The pallbearers are to be Irad Welch, William Grinnell, Joel Goodrick, A. A. Wilson, John Davidson and Walter Hagen. Interment will take
place in the Janesville cemetery. Among those from out of town who will attend the services are Elizabeth, James, Charles and Marjorie Goldsmith, grandchildren of the deceased.
