Gilbert originally enlisted in the Michigan company of the Western Sharp Shooters in August 1862. His two brothers Seth and Prosper had already been soldiers in the regiment for nearly a year. Their company was Co. D of what became known as the 66th Illinois during the Civil War, and better known as the Western Sharp Shooters. In 1862 Gilbert was transferred to Co. H made up mostly of Ohio boys. Gilbert's first battle was Corinth, and he fought throughout the Atlanta Campaign. He was discharged along with his brothers and the regiment in July 1865.

After the war he and his wife lived in Minnesota, then Texas, and eventually California. Just before he died Gilbert resided in the National Soldiers Home in Los Angeles.
