Seth Bowe and his two brothers Gilbert and Prosper enlisted in Company D, Birge's Western Sharp Shooters in late 1861. Co. D was formed of men from southwestern Michigan. He enlisted as a Sergeant and fought at the battles of Mt. Zion, Mo., Ft. Donelson, Shiloh, and the siege of Corinth. Seth was discharged on account of disability in June 1862.

Prior to the war Seth Bowe had graduated from the Columbia Veterinary College in New York. He practiced as a veterinarian before enlisting and afterwards in Michigan and in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. For some years he served as veterinarian for the circus.
