In June 1850 at the age of 21 the then widowed Margaret Wimmer Johnson migrated to Utah, leaving from Kanesville,Iowa (Present day Council Bluffs) in the Mormon Pioneer(100 wagon), James Pace Company. Her husband Hugh Johnson had passed away in the Winter Quarters area sometime between 1848 and 1850. She was accompanied by her two little children; 2 year old William Rufus Johnson, and 4 year old George Hugh Johnson. Her parents and other family members migrated in the same wagon train.
In 1852 in Salt Lake City, Utah she married Elam Cheney and they had 13 children: Louisa Ellen, Elam, Jr., Elizabeth Ellen, Jane & John [twins], Aaron Elijah, Peter Wimmer, Franklin, Theodore Franklin, Orson, Moses, Moroni and Orrin.
