One of Alexandria's best known citizens and sportsmen, Emil Lehmkuhl, died of a heart attack at his deer hunting camp near Walker Wednesday morning.
Funeral services were announced set for Saturday at the Zion Lutheran church.
Emil Lehmkuhl died under virtually the same circumstances as his late brother and former business partner, Rudy. The later died of a heart attack while hunting pheasants in 1940.
Lehmkuhl, his wife, his son, Orville, of Minneapolis, his brother-in-law, Henry Dreger of Morgan and his wife and his son-in-law, Rudy Forkel of Alexandria, formed a hunting party which left for the Walker area last Friday. Tuesday Lemhkuhl and his wife drove back to Alexandria with three deer, left them at the locker plant and then returned to the hunting camp. Early Wednesday morning Lemhkuhl collapsed from a heart attack and died in camp. The six were discussing hunting plans before leaving camp when Lehmkuhl was seized with the attack.
Lehmkuhl was born in Echo, Minn., on Nov. 5, fifty-nine years ago. He moved to Alexandria in 1929 and, together with his brother, Rudy, opened the Lehmkuhl Shoe Repair Shop. The two operated this business for a number of years.
Emil Lehmkuhl retired about 13 years ago after being in the insurance business for a short time. Long active in Zion Lutheran church, Lehmkuhl held the office of chairman there for many years. It was reported that he has been ailing for the past year and had had several previous heart attacks.
He is survived by his wife, his daughter, Alma (Mrs. Rudy Forkel) of Alexandria, his daughter, Nina (Mrs. Ray Merten) of St. Cloud, and his son, Orville of Minneapolis.
