North Montana Horseman Dies Suddenly While Attending Fair
Havre, Sept. 10--The body of Stephen J. Adams, 62, northern Montana horseman, who died of a heart attack at Fort Benton while attending the Chouteau County fair, was brought to Havre for burial in Highland cemetery. Adams was at the fair with his string of race horses.
Adams was born at Carthage, Mo., Feb. 13, 1878. When 9 years old his parents moved to Anaconda and in 1890 came to the Milk river valley, five miles west of Chinook, where they homesteaded.
Adams had been interested in horse breeding for many years and in horse racing for 40 years. He was also engaged in contracting and built many roads and highways in the valley.
Jan. 20, 1920, he married Marjorie Redmond of Butte. Three children were born, James E., Rose Marie, and Donna Jean, who survive. He also had three sons by a former marriage, Ellsworth A., Havre, and Stephen A. and Arthur G., Los Angeles. There also survive a sister, Mrs. A. G. Staton, Havre; a brother, Oscar Dougherty, Chinook; two nephews and four nieces.
