On July 2, 1911, a daughter, Maude Ellen was born in Alexandria, Minnesota to George and Maude (Emerson) Sheldrick. She attended elementary school in LaGrande Township and also lived in Superior, Wisconsin before moving with her family to Minneapolis. Following graduation from high school Maude worked at the Powers and Dayton's Department Stores.
Maude was married to Roy Nelson in 1929. The couple became the parents of a son, Dan and resided in Minneapolis. In 1945 the family moved to Alexandria where they owned and managed the Darling Heights Resort until his death in 1959. Maude also worked at Herberger's Department store for a number of years.
On October 6, 1963 Maude and John Ellis were married in Alexandria. They observed 24 years of marriage before his death in 1987.
Maude was active in the Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school and worked with the wedding and funeral committees. She served as co-chairman of the salad luncheon for many years at church. She was active in the Eastern Star organization in which she was a member for over 50 years. Her relationships with her friends and family were important to her. She was always ready to share what she had and offer hospitality to others.
Maude died at her hoe on February 5, 1999. She was 87 years of age. Maude was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; and three brothers: George, Milton and Milford Sheldrick.
She is survived by her son Dan and wife Jean Nelson of Alexandria; three granddaughters: Marty Lynn and husband Richard Dutch of Corona, CA; Kristine and husband Michael Nelson of Portland, OR; Julie and husband David Carlson of Newburgh, IN; five great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law Alice Ellis of Alexandria.
Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church of Alexandria with Rev. William Rowen officiating. Entombment followed in Kinkead Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Bill Becker, Joe Garrett, Jack Hedine, Gary Ellis, Duane Frederick and Delmore Gustafson. Honorary pallbearers were David Carlson, Michael Nelson and Richard Dutch. Arrangements with Anderson Funeral Home, Alexandria.
