May 30 1942: Unidentified adult male found just above the high water mark on the western side of Metinic Island, Maine by a Woodbury Snow.
The man was approximately 5'9" and weighed approximately 165 pounds. The body was so badly decomposed the identification by recognition of the features or fingerprints was impossible.
He was clothed in a faded blue striped shirt, a light pullover sweater and a plaid mackinaw which before long exposure might have been black and a tan or yellow. There were no trousers on the body and only one rubber boot which had a red sole and bore the trade mark, LaCrosse. The sweater had an emblem on the chest that consisted of what was once a yellow or orange disc with wings attached and black cat in the center of the disc.
It was believed that this body was one of the missing Doughty family members from Port Clyde, Maine (father and two sons) but no one was able to identify the clothing of the man as belonging to anyone from the area
Body was brought to Spruce Head, Maine and then buried on June 5, 1942 in grave number 23 in the City Farm Cemetery, Rockland, Maine. The medical examiner, H.J. Weisman determined that the date of death was about March or April 1942.
Thought to be from one or more merchant ships sunk by German U-boats during WWII.
