Robert Alexander Smith

Born in Anderson County, Tenn., May 21, 1869; Scotch-Irish descent; father's name, Andrew T. Smith, farmer; mother's maiden name, Isabella Galbraith; paternal grandparents William and Betsy (Duncan) Smith; maternal grandparents Robert and Glorando (McKamey) Galbraith; member of M.E. Church, I.O.O.F., Jr. O.U.A.M., K. of P., M.W.A.; Republican. Married Inez Brown of Hawkins Co., May 26, 1899. Elected sheriff of Anderson Co., in August, 1910, which office he served for six years; was then elected Tax Assessor of Anderson County, serving for four years; appointed U.S. Deputy Marshall under President Harding, which office he held for 12 years; became sheriff of Anderson County again in August, 1934, and re-elected in August, 1936. His wide official experience especially fits him for the office which he holds, which together with his courtesy to the public makes him very popular in his county. Father of 12 children: - R.B., Mrs. Inez Barum, R. A., Jr., Mrs. Alma Hick of Detroit, George, Mrs. Nannie Weber, Clara, J. Tom, and Clarence; Mrs. Frances Hicks, Charlie, and infant deceased.
