Patriarch John Cook dies at Mill Creek
(Was Senior Patriarch of Granite Stake of Zion at Time of His Death)

John Cook, senior patriarch of the Granite stake of Zion, died at his home at Mill Creek last Saturday night. Death was due to a gradual decline, due to his advanced age. Mr. Cook was born at Eastwood, Nottingham, Eng., Nov. 28, 1822, and so at the time of his death was close to 87 years old.
Besides his widow, Rebecca J. Cook, he leaves eight sons and daughters as follows: John Cook of Vernal, Utah; Eliza Kirkwood and Mira Cook of Provo; Lucy Cook, Heber Cook, Gertrude Casper, George H. and Ernest Cook of Salt Lake county.
He was president of the high priests' quorum in the Granite stake from date of its organization until a little more than a year before his death. He was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Dec. 25, 1850, in his native country, where he filled a mission, during which time he was made president of the London conference. He afterwards emigrated [immigrated] to Utah in 1861 and has resided in Salt Lake county ever since.
In the year 1876, Mr. Cook was again sent on a mission to the state of Ohio. From there he was sent to England and appointed a second time to preside over a London conference. He returned to Utah in 1878.
The funeral will be held at Mill Creek ward meetinghouse at 2 o'clock p.m. Wednesday. The remains of the deceased may be viewed by the friends at the residence on the old county road in the present Winder ward, from 12 to 1 o'clock p.m. on Wednesday. No flowers. Friends invited.
