Before she was 10 years old, her family migrated to McHenry County, Illinois. Here her father joined the Civil War effort on the Union side in which he was injured and hospitalized. After some recuperation, he returned home and the family migrated to the Spencer, Iowa area about 1869. This is where both her parents passed away in the early 1900s.
She married Watson Ellis on December 2, 1868 in McHenry County, Illinois and had her 1st child, a son, before moving to Iowa. Some family lore says that Watson Ellis went to McHenry County after being released from Andersonville. He had an Aunt who lived there.
The Ellis family welcomed two more children, both girls, into the family during the 5 years they spent in Iowa. Then the family headed out again. In 1875, her youngest child is born in Ponca, Nebraska. Then in 1880, she is living back in Iowa. According to the census records she is a servant living in her employer's house with her youngest child. The two older girls are living with their grandparents not too far away. She is declared a widow on the census record.
She married Joseph Jackson On January 4, 1881 in Independence, Iowa. The family then migrated to Montana in March 1883 via emmigrant train unloading in Bozeman, but beginning a migration north to Lewistown.
In the early 1900s, there was another family migration, this time from Montana to California (and sometimes back again, like my line). Mary and Joe passed away in Long Beach and are buried in Sunnyside Cemetery.
