Ben was born in Derby, Kansas. His father, James McElhaney worked for the Rail Road building bridges & trestles in various states. His father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother Martha Creelman came from Ireland as a babe.
The family settled in Benton County, Arkansas where Ben grew up. His mother died when he was 16 years old. He followed his older sister Anna to Norman Oklahoma.
He married 15 year old Retta Adeline Andrews on April 11, 1908 in Goldsby, Oklahoma.
They had eight children. Four boys and Four girls. (One daughter dying as an infant)
He was a farmer and during the depression, he and his oldest son Ben Jr, took a team around and dug cellars for people.
His wife Addie died in 1937 leaving him with three children still at home. The McElhaneys remained a very close knit family all their lives.
Ben died September 6, 1947 in Norman of a sudden heart attack.
