Jim was the son of James David McElhaney and Martha Creelman. He was born Burlington, Iowa in 1871,when his father worked for the railroad as a bridge and trestle builder. The family settled in Monte Ne, Benton County, Arkansas. He moved to Oklahoma after his wife, Cora A Campbell died in 1898 at the age of 23. He never remarried. With the help of his sister, Anna Howery he raised his only child, a daughter Chloe. (She is also buried in this cemetery under Chloe Jahn) He farmed in the Norman area in partner with his brother Ben McElhaney.Jim later came to New Mexico where he lived out his life.
