"JAMES BENDER DIES SUDDENLY

Well Known Resident Succumbs In His Chair Wednesday Afternoon

At 4:30PM Wednesday afternoon, taps were sounded for James Bender, a veteran of the civil war and a well known resident of this city, at the family home on Fifth Street, the final summons coming very unexpectedly. Mr Bender was in his apparent good health on Wednesday, and had been shopping with his wife in the afternoon. While with some friends up town he complained of not feeling well, and went home, where he expired in a few minutes in his chair. Mr Bender has been subject to attacks of the heart in the past, his last sick spell being before Thanksgiving. Death was due to apoplexy.

The deceased was born in Windsor, Mass, May 27, 1841, being 70 years of age at the time of death. When 12 years of age with his parents he moved to Wisconsin, where in 1861 he enlisted in the Wisconsin Sharpshooters (1st U S Sharpshooters, Co G). After a service of one year he joined the 3rd Minnesota (Light) Artillery (Battery). While in the army, his parents, Mr & Mrs Wm Bender, moved to Kalmar, this county, where he came at the close of his service for his country. Thirty-nine years ago the 27th of May, he was wedded to Miss Florence Morrow, at Marion, and twelve years ago he and his family moved to this city.

Besides the bereaved widow, he is survived by one son, Thomas of this city, four daughters, Mrs Wm Gordy of Kasson, Mrs R L Jones and Mrs Z A Folsom of Lake Crystal and Miss Emma of this city, who has been teaching at Elkton, S.D. There are also four brothers, Edgar, Frank and Bartus of Lake Crystal, Edward of Sioux City, IA, and two sisters, Mrs G Cole of Lake Crystal and Mrs Wm Humphrey of Medford, OR.
Mr Bender was a consistent member of the Methodist church and an enthusiastic comrade in Custer Post, GAR, being the Senior Vice Commander, to which position he was recently reelected.

The funeral service will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, at the home. Rev E V DuBois officiating. The GAR will have charge of the ceremonies.
James Bender had many friends in Rochester, to whom his sudden death has brought sorrow. Those who knew him best will miss him in the daily walks of this life, and in the Grand Army circle his loss will be greatly mourned. The bugle call has sounded for a good citizen and a faithful soldier. The sympathy of the community will be extended to the bereaved loved ones.
